AYURVEDIC DRY BRUSHING: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

Our ancestors were far more advanced than we presume. They knew the intricacies of medicines that were directly derived from nature. There is a lot of mystery and propaganda surrounding their beliefs. It has been under scrutiny for centuries now, but it was not just a science, it was a way of life, the one we turn back to when all else fails. This science is called ‘Ayurveda,’ and we must be proud of it as it is our legacy.

Ayurveda- It is a term that highlights the value of a healthy life. Ayur stands for ‘life’ and Veda for ‘knowledge.’ Together they translate to ‘the knowledge of life.’ Ayurveda is the art and science of a robust life.

By embracing Ayurveda, you choose longevity in a world full of uncertainties.

With this thought, let us explore the practice called the Dry Brushing Technique under the Ayurvedic treatment options. This technique has been in practice for almost 3000 years, and its references were found in various cultures like Egyptian, Chinese, and Greek, but it was extensively used in Ayurvedic techniques developed in India.

Dry Brushing is known as ‘Garshana’ in Ayurveda. Garshana is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘friction’. In Ayurveda, it is part of a peculiar oil massage known as Abhyanga.

Benefits of Dry Brushing

It is believed that Dry Brushing has a deep impact on our overall health. Let’s consider them one by one:

  • Exfoliation

It is a process of removal of dead skin cells on the outer layer of the skin. This Dry Brushing Technique is found to be efficient in exfoliating. It improves the texture of the skin, clears all clogged pores and creates a way for new cells to surface in their place.

  • Circulation

It improves blood flow as the application of the dry brush creates mild inflammation and the circulation in that area is improved.

  • In temporarily treating Cellulite

The cellulite dimples may plump and look normal for a while. This helps improve the appearance of the skin.

  • Lymph Flow

The lymphatic system is believed to clear the toxic waste in our bodies. Dry Brushing is believed to improve its flow and thus detoxify.

  • Rejuvenation

It is believed that Dry Brushing Technique stimulates the nerve endings under the skin. It will leave you feeling refreshed.

How it is done?

Dry Brushing could be done once or twice a week. It is safe to do it once or twice a day depending on your skin sensitivity. Usually, it is advised to be done in the morning before the bath when the skin is dry. Do not apply oil or lotion before Dry Brushing.

It could be carried out in a dry bathroom or tub. So that the dead skin does not spread around. Always make sure you store the brush in a dry place. After use, clean the brush with a mild soap or shampoo and air dry it.

The technique is to stroke towards the heart. Start from your leg and work upwards. On joints and stomach, brush it in a circular motion. Apply the right pressure. Do not hard press or let it slide over. In sensitive areas apply gently, on rough skin put a little pressure.

Risks

It is a safe technique for healthy skin, but in case of frequent application will result in microtears. These will exacerbate if you have inflammatory skin conditions like psoriasis, eczema and sensitive skin. It should not be done on open wounds. If you have any of these conditions, consult a doctor before incorporating this technique into your routine.

The dry Brushing technique is not expensive and can be done by oneself. But if you take help from a professional Ayurvedic practitioner, it could be more effective.
