Procedure
Steps Involved in Abhyangam Therapy
Step 1: Preparation
The individual sits on a traditional wooden bed, called a Droni. Warm herbal oils, chosen based on the individual's dosha and health concerns, are prepared.
Step 2: Head, Neck, and Shoulders
Massage begins with the head using gentle circular motions. Neck and shoulders are massaged to release tension and improve blood flow.
Step 3: Chest and Back
The chest is massaged with smooth, outward strokes. The individual leans forward, and the back is treated with long strokes and circular movements.
Step 4: Full Body Massage
The individual lies down on their back, right side, left side, and stomach in sequence. Long strokes, kneading, and circular motions are applied to each limb, followed by the abdomen.
Step 5: Feet and Hands
Special focus is given to the palms and soles, as they are energy points in Ayurvedic practice.
Step 6: Final Relaxation
After the massage, the individual rests for a few minutes to allow the oils to penetrate the skin. A warm bath or herbal steam may follow to enhance the therapeutic effects.
