What is Ayurveda?

Five thousand years old and still the most sensible approach to health we've come across.

Ayurveda started in India and the name literally means the science of life. Not the science of illness. Not the science of fixing things once they break. Life. The whole thing, from how you eat to how you rest to why your body keeps sending you the same signals no matter how many times you ignore them.

That one distinction tells you almost everything about how it thinks.

It Starts With You Specifically

Most health advice assumes everyone works the same way. Eat this, avoid that, sleep eight hours, drink more water. Good advice on paper. But bodies are not identical and lives are not identical and what works for one person can do very little for another.

Ayurveda takes one look at that approach and politely disagrees.

It works from the idea that every person has a unique constitution called a prakriti. Think of it as your personal health blueprint, the one you were born with. Understanding yours is where everything begins. What you eat, how you sleep, why stress hits you the way it does, what your body needs more of and what it's had enough of. All of it connects back to your individual makeup. And once you understand that, a lot of things about yourself start making a lot more sense.

The Three Doshas

Ayurveda describes three fundamental energies that exist in every person. They're called Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Most people have one or two that lead the way and that combination is what makes your health, your personality and your patterns entirely your own.

Vata is movement and air. Creative, quick, light. In balance it's brilliant. Out of balance it's anxiety and three am overthinking.

Pitta is fire and drive. Sharp, focused, efficient. In balance it gets things done. Out of balance it's inflammation, irritability and burning the candle at every possible end.

Kapha is earth and stability. Warm, grounded, steady. In balance it's the calmest person in the room. Out of balance it's heaviness, resistance and a general feeling of being stuck.

No dosha is better than another. The goal is balance, not perfection. And the first step toward that balance is simply knowing which energy you're working with. Most people find that just having a name for the patterns they've always noticed in themselves is oddly reassuring.

What Happens at Vaidyam

Au Revoir is a wellness resort built around the idea that real rest and real healing work best together. Not as two separate things you try to fit into a weekend but as one complete experience that supports both at the same time.

Vaidyam is our Ayurvedic wellness centre inside the resort where that belief becomes an actual experience.

It starts with a proper consultation. A practitioner who listens, understands your constitution and figures out what your body is genuinely asking for right now. Then treatments that are chosen for you, not just offered to everyone.

Abhyanga is a warm herbal oil massage tailored to your dosha. It works deeper than a typical massage and leaves the nervous system in a state of calm that most people forgot was possible.

Shirodhara is a continuous warm oil pour over the forehead. It sounds simple. It is somehow one of the most deeply quieting experiences a person can have. The mind just stops.

Panchakarma is a multi day programme for when you need more than a single session. It clears accumulated toxins, resets digestion and gives the body a proper reset rather than a temporary top up. People who go through it often come out saying they feel more like themselves than they have in a long time.

Full details are on our treatments page.

The Gut and the Rest of It

Ayurveda places digestion at the centre of almost everything. Strong digestive fire means the body absorbs well, eliminates well and stays resilient. Weak digestion means toxins build and everything downstream suffers including energy, skin, sleep and mood.

This is why so many people find that Ayurveda addresses things that nothing else quite reached. The connection between what you eat, how you feel and how your mind functions is not coincidence. Ayurveda mapped that connection thousands of years ago.

Food guidance in Ayurveda is personal, seasonal and surprisingly practical. Warm food, mindful eating, understanding how your body actually responds. Nothing extreme. Just paying attention in a way most of us have stopped doing.

Why the Setting Matters

The resort is not incidental to the healing. The quiet, the pace, the green, the deliberate slowing down that Au Revoir creates around you. It puts the body in a state where Vaidyam's treatments can actually land properly. You arrive carrying a lot. The environment starts working on that before you've even had your first session.

That is the thing about combining a wellness resort with serious Ayurvedic care. The two support each other in a way that neither can do alone. Peace and rejuvenation together. That's the combination that makes the difference.

Where to Begin

You don't need to have done any research or know your dosha before you arrive. You don't need to have tried anything like this before. You just need to show up.

We'll keep writing on this blog about Ayurveda, the treatments at Vaidyam, what guests experience and the smaller everyday practices that make a real difference. Useful things, honestly written, nothing overcomplicated.

For now the treatments page is a good place to look around. Or reach out and we'll point you in the right direction.

I have been exhausted for months, nothing has really helped. Can Ayurveda actually do something about that?

That exhaustion you cannot explain? Ayurveda has a name for it. And more importantly, a solution. Most of the guests who walk into Vaidyam are not sick. They are just completely done. Running on habit rather than actual energy. Ayurveda gets to the root of that in a way that a holiday alone never quite does. Come to Au Revoir for the rest. Leave Vaidyam with something that lasts a lot longer. For enquiries and reservations write to us at reservations@aurevoir.co.im or visit our contact page.

How is Vaidyam different from a regular spa?

A spa sends you home relaxed. Vaidyam sends you home rebalanced. Every treatment here is chosen for you specifically, your dosha, your current state, what your body is asking for right now. That personalisation is what makes the difference.

What actually happens during an Ayurvedic consultation at Vaidyam?

It is less clinical than you might expect. A practitioner sits with you, asks about your sleep, your digestion, your energy, your stress. Not to tick boxes but to genuinely understand how your body works. From that conversation comes a treatment plan that is entirely yours. No two are the same.
